Act 1: Brothers
Scene 1: Ocamp
(Nokia and Alvin are stage left)
Nokia: (breathless, runs out from stage left) Luckily, I’m not late. Oh my god! What a coincidence! We went to the same secondary school and university, and now we’re in the same group for Ocamp ( a camp for freshers )! Come on…
Alvin: Dude! I can’t tell you how much I wanted to team up with Tom.
Nokia: I know you’d rather team up with me though~
Alvin: Bro, stop touching me! I am straight as fuck. (wipes himself) Speaking of which, I heard this Ocamp is a lot of fun, with lots of drinks and girls!
Nokia: No way… I just got drunk last week, fell down the stairs at Bayshore, and my hand is just starting to feel better! You know me, I’m the good boy. I’m not drinking… but maybe when we get back to the UK, I can party again!
Alvin: Don’t be such a bore! It’s not like we’re like those LSE people! Hey, Do you think I actually don’t know? — KCL is famous for having the most fun in London!
Nokia: Nahhhhh
Alvin: Stop pretending! You are not coming just because there are not much pretty girls here. (speaking softly) But you are right, the pretty girls here are even less than my body count!
Nokia: Right? If there are no hot chicks, then there’s nothing to do! When we play games at night, I’d rather go to bed.
Alvin: But don’t say that! Just like Confucius said, drinking is a respect for the night. Getting drunk is a respect for the drink. If I ask you to drink, it’s a respect for you. You’re not disrespecting me, right? Just because there are no hot girls doesn’t mean we can’t drink together! It’s rare that we’re in the same group!
Nokia: Look at you, talking about brotherhood! We’ve known each other for seven years — three years in Hong Kong high school, four years in the UK. How many times have I liked a girl and you didn’t chase her away? (confused) And Confucius didn’t say all this wet nonsense! He’s pretty eloquent though.
Alvin: (puts an arm around Nokia’s shoulder) Hey! Just now the group leader said many people are coming at night, and I heard there are a few pretty girls. Either way, you see someone you like, I’ll set it up for you. (patting his chest)
Nokia: Huh? So I want to ask, why did the girl I wanted to talk to wake up in your bed the very next morning?
Alvin: An accident, it was really an accident! Look, bro, this time I’ll really help you score!
Nokia: Ugh! This will be the last time I trust you.…
(Three girls and the group leader (freshers in the camp are arranged in groups and led by a second yr group leader) Easton enter from stage left)
Easton: Hello, I’m your group leader Easton! These are girls new to KCL this year. Don’t mess with anyone, okay? I introduced everyone in the WhatsApp group. You are Nokia, and you are Alvin. I didn’t mix that up, right?
Nokia, Alvin: Yes, yes! Hellooo!
Alvin: Just wanted to ask if there are a lot of drinking games tonight.
Easton: (surprised) Damn! fresher nowadays! But yeah, it’s going to be a lot of fun.
Nokia: Will the drinking parties be like the ones at UCL? If so, I’ll just go back to my room to sleep.
Easton: No way! The parties are way better than those at Midland!
Alvin: Then it's on!
Easton: (looking back at the girls) Alright, everyone can go together now.
Nokia: (walking and talking) Speaking of which, last time we went to the IC Ocamp…
(The two look at each other and laugh)
Blackout
(The two brothers enter, walking towards the middle left. All lights on)
Tom, Casey, Candy, and three or four other guys are there; the other three or four guys are playing on their own (Singaporean guy, flashy guy, wild girl, etc.)
(Nighttime drinking game)
Easton: (opening the door) Friends from group 2, these two are my firmest teammates. Bring them along to play drinking games with you. I have some things to do, I’ll be back later.
Alvin: Hey… long time no see…
(Alvin and Nokia wave)
Besides Alvin and Tom, the other three wave to say hello.
The three friends go back to their game.
Tom: Finally, I’ve been waiting for you two! What’s up? The firmest freshers? So you have to take a shot first!
Alvin: Tom, bro, we’re all friends here, is that okay…?
Nokia: Yeah!
Tom: Just because we’re friends, that’s why I ask you to drink.
Alvin: Okay! Fine!
The two brothers stand together and take a shot.
Tom: Oh right! Let me introduce you (pointing with his hand at Candy and Casey) This is Candy. (pauses) This is Casey. They just arrived, and you met the others when we were playing the drinking games earlier.
Nokia, Alvin: Yoooo!
Tom: Hey, you guys just said hi but didn’t introduce yourselves. How would they know who you are!
Alvin: (the first to react) Eh! I’m Alvin, and this guy here is Nokia.
(Nokia lightly smacks Alvin on the right)
Alvin: (rubbing his face) He usually is like this, sorry. I’ll train him better later.
(Their chemistry makes Candy and Casey laugh)
(Nokia is angry but can only smile awkwardly)
(Nokia and Candy have eye contact, and Candy politely smiles at Nokia)
(Candy is stunned)
Spotlight just on Nokia and Candy with funny music
Spotlight back to everyone
Alvin: There aren’t enough seats! No worries! We’ll sit on the floor!
Tom: Yeah, some people came over and took all the seats, so we’re sitting on the floor too. Let the girls have the seats. Sit down, sit down!
Alvin sits down and sees that Nokia is still standing.
Spotlight back to everyone
Alvin: Hey, sit down! What are you doing?
Nokia: (seems to come back to reality, sits down) Oh (realizes he has lost composure, but his eyes never leave Candy)
Candy: (talking to the nearby girl Casey) I’m going to the restroom.
Casey: I’ll go with you.
(Candy and Casey move aside, Nokia follows Candy with his eyes, even after Candy goes backstage, Nokia still gazes in that direction)
Tom: Where are you going?
Candy: To the restroom.
Alvin: What’s going on?
Tom: This time it’s just to chill and drink. But while the two of them are gone, how about we play a round of Mai? Sound good?
Alvin: You’re the boss, you call the shots!
Tom: Speaking of that. Hey! Everyone, let’s play Mai!
(Everyone stretches their hands out, noticing that Nokia hasn’t put his hand out)
Hey, Nokia! Nokia! It’s game time!
Nokia: Oh, okay (puts his hand out)
Tom: I’ll start, this side gets to drink! Next two teams drink! Alright, here it comes! This is really happening!
(Someone starts)
Let’s drink first!
Alvin: Bad boy, learning all my nonsense.
Tom: What nonsense! This is a good tradition. You taught it!
No exact scene change
But after the blackout, the lights come back to show they’ve been playing for a long time.
Scene 2: Alone
Nokia: So! We’ve been playing for so long, I don’t even know what you’re studying.
Candy: I study Media, and you?
Nokia: I study Biomed Engineering.
(Pause)
Nokia: I didn’t expect you to be this impressive. Everyone is drunk, but you are still sober.
Candy: I mean, you either, no?
Nokia: What do you mean? I’m famous for never getting drunk, but for a girl, you are considered of having a large drinking capacity!
Candy: (pretending to be angry) Huh! Are you being sexist now?
Nokia: No, no, no! (looks at Candy’s face, realizing he seems to have offended her) I really didn’t mean it! It’s just that guys physiologically have more of that unknown enzyme, so…
Candy: (seeing Nokia panic, can’t help but laugh) I was just making fun of you!
Nokia: (realizing) Ah! You scared me! I was worried you’d be mad!
Candy: By the way! I saw that 97 has a promotion, buy one get one free, just near the campsite. Do you… want to go out for a meal after camp?
Candy: Huh, but I’m not sure if I should eat with my groupmates.
Nokia: Oh, that’s fine, we can go eat another time.
Candy: Sounds good, remember to invite Alvin! (realizing her mistake) What I mean is, the three of you should come!
Nokia: There’s no saying it can’t be done (grinning, softly) but I just want to go with you.
Candy: Sorry, I missed it. What did you say?
Nokia: Uh, nothing, nothing.
Candy: See you tomorrow! I’ll take Casey back to the room to sleep! Keep an eye on Alvin!
Nokia: (with a disappointed look) Bye…
Blackout
Scene 3: Help
Location: Restaurant/Home (any place for meals)
The three brothers are having a meal.
(Nokia is staring blankly at his phone, thinking about how to pursue Candy, poking rice with his chopsticks)
Tom: The rice didn’t offend you, did it? Respect the rice, every grain is hard-earned.
Nokia: (snaps back to reality, puts down his phone) Right! Aren’t you supposed to help me?
Tom: Help with what? Which thing?
Alvin: You mean pursuing a girl?
Nokia: I told you guys last week! Do you have goldfish memories? I said I wanted to pursue Candy! (acting shy)
Alvin: Isn’t she the one you mentioned last time? You have such bad taste! She’s got pig eyes, a big nose, a froggy voice, a stocky body, and elephant legs! Not one part of her looks good!
Tom: Seriously! If it weren’t for us being in the UK, we would’ve called the animal control to catch her and send her back to the zoo.
Nokia: Damn! No way!
Tom: So who is Candy? Show her insta!
Nokia: What? The one from Ocamp!
Nokia: (turns on his phone and shows Tom) Look…
Tom: (focused) Oh… it’s her… Last time at Ocamp during truth or dare, you said she’s the girl you want to date. I didn’t expect you to be serious. She’s really quite something… I give her a Tier 1 rating. Wait a minute, isn’t she in the second year?
Alvin: Second year !!! Are you guys even human? (takes the phone away) Anyways, It’s not just a Tier 1 rating! But, Nokia, you’re so abstract in looks. You can’t even get that mid-tier Athena. This is hell-level difficulty for you. Are you sure?
Nokia: What! (rubs his hair) I have a baby face, how could girls not like me!
(Nokia prepares to hit Alvin.)
Tom: Wait!
Nokia, Alvin: (looking at Tom at the same time) What is it?
Tom: Is she single?
Nokia: You scared me, I thought you were saying something! Although I’m lonely and cold, I wouldn’t mess with someone who’s taken! I have standards.
Nokia: Moreover, even if she has a boyfriend, it’s still the same.
(Nokia winks at Alvin, Alvin understands and laughs)
Nokia, Alvin: (in unison) There’s only one competitor!
Nokia: Back to the point. I’m only sending her reels now, I don’t know how to move to the next step!
Alvin: Ask her out for a meal, walk around! It’s just that!
Nokia: I’ve tried that, but I’m afraid there’s nothing to talk about, it’s awkward.
Message sound (Tom checks his phone)
Alvin: Don’t be like Tom, physiologically he might be a man, but psychologically he’s castrated. Thinking so much. If you like her, then go for it! Being afraid of awkwardness, if you’re afraid of everything, then don’t pursue!
Tom gives a middle finger 🖕: Damn you! Good news! There’s another party next week, Candy should be there too. Just seize the opportunity!
Nokia: (interrupting) I know, I know, I know. I’ll seduce her, then we’ll get it on.
Alvin: You better!
Tom: Idiot! I mean you should actively flirt with her and get closer!
Alvin: Dude, why do I have such brothers like you! If you keep this up, I’ll cut ties with you!
Tom: Seriously.
Blackout
Scene 4: Game Night
(Everyone is playing a game halfway through)
Easton: (draws a K) K! Drink by yourself! Drink five sips! Drink or don’t drink! Hey hey hey (points at Candy) number 2, drink along!
Candy: (drunk) Drink or don’t drink...
Nokia: (trying to take Candy's cup) You shouldn’t drink anymore, let me drink it for you.
Candy: (snatches it back, leans against Alvin) I can still drink (drinks).
Alvin: (no reaction) Ugh, you want to drink and get drunk, so weak.
Candy: (snuggles up to Alvin)
Nokia: (looking displeased)
(Candy isn’t playing anymore; others continue drawing cards. Nokia isn’t focused on the game, the whole time watching Candy)
Candy: (softly) Alvin, you’re really charming (getting closer and closer).
Alvin: (still focused on the game) You’re going to get drunk!
Candy: No, I… (kisses Alvin briefly)
Alvin: (no reaction) (awkwardly looks at Nokia)
Nokia: (furiously slams the table and leaves)
Tom: (noticing the awkward situation, says they should disperse) Ugh, everyone’s drunk, it’s meaningless. Let’s wrap it up!
(Alvin has pulled away from Candy and moved away)
(Nokia picks up a drink and keeps drinking)
Easton: (lifting Candy and her friends) Hey! We’ll leave first! I need to take them back, you guys be careful!
Tom, Alvin: Alright, alright!
Tom: (knowing the atmosphere is off but still hoping not to cause a scene, tries to break the awkwardness) Well… we should head out too, okay?
Alvin: Oh…
Blackout
Scene 5: Tom's Birthday
(Nokia is furious and disdainful while eating with Alvin)
(Alvin is indifferent to the situation)
Tom: Hey! It’s my birthday today, so let’s raise a glass.
Alvin: Okay, okay, let’s drink!
Nokia: Oh (raises his glass casually)
Tom: What’s with you? It’s my birthday, and you’re making a face like a bitter melon! If you don’t say anything, I’d think you’re dead!
Alvin: (chuckles lightly) With a bitter melon face, no wonder you can’t get a girl! That’s why Candy doesn’t like you!
Nokia: (slams the table) What do you mean by that!
Alvin: (calmly) Whoa whoa whoa, just joking! Can’t even joke!
Tom: (anxiously) Hey, let’s all just ease up a bit…
Nokia: Tom, hang on a second. I need to ask Chen. Chen, what happened that night?
Alvin: He was the one who kissed her! I didn’t do anything!
Nokia: Did nothing? After it ended, you kept texting her, and that’s what you call doing nothing?
Alvin: Just texting! She initiated it! When she came to talk to me, I just flirted with her!
Nokia: You don’t think you’re charming or handsome enough that even Candy would want a taste of you? (flipping the table)
Alvin: Yeah, I really think I’m good-looking!
Nokia: (after thinking for a moment) Sure, you’re the best at stealing your brother's girl, right?
Alvin: So if Candy doesn’t like you and likes me, what can I do? I’m not holding a gun to her head to kiss me!
Nokia: (shoving him) What are you talking about?
Alvin: (lightly pushes him back) You’re the one moving around!
Tom (immediately stands between them): Everyone calm down, there’s no need to ruin the mood.
Alvin: Your brother is losing it! For a girl, you’re even moving against your brother. Is everyone pursuing girls as loud as you? If a girl isn’t into you, she won’t pay you any mind! You need to be more low-key in the future!
(Blackout with red light)
Scene 6: Drunken Confessions
Location: Tom’s House
Tom: (slightly drunk) Bro, do you know how hard it is for me to be stuck in the middle of the mess between you and Alvin? There are some things brothers shouldn’t keep bottled up.
(Pause)
Alvin says he didn’t pursue Candy; she kissed him out of nowhere. He told me privately, so I believe him. Are you dry for too long? Your brother doesn’t believe you.
Nokia: (dismissively, wanting to end the topic) You’re drunk! You should rest early.
Tom: (drunkenly) I’m not drunk! What’s brotherhood? You’re the one who’s been the loudest, but the one who helped the most is also him.
Nokia: (dismissively) Mmm, I know. Go to bed now.
Tom: (drunkenly) What bed? Am I like you? Even though I’m bi, I’m not that easygoing. I have standards. But you, just getting up casually is not even human.
Nokia: Dude, go to sleep. (helps Tom to the head of the bed, tucks him in)
Tom: I’m not done talking! (sits up in bed, drinks all the whiskey he’s holding, pauses for the burning sensation from the liquor to fade) (more passionately)
What’s brotherhood? When you needed help, Alvin would come over to help you at two or threein the morning. Do you remember that? When I was ready to score, you handed me your one and only condom, that's brotherhood! (voice fading) So why let a girl get in the way like this... (leans back, quickly lying down)
Nokia: (hesitating) I...

Scene 7: Nokia's Monologue
Location: Outside Tom's House
(Nokia is holding a bottle of whiskey)
Nokia:
Yes... it’s about brotherhood. But damn, he knows I like Candy! Why would he just go for her out of nowhere?
(takes a sip of whiskey)
Could it be that Candy really has feelings for him? No way! I’m so damn handsome!
I’m so damn responsible!
I’m so damn... (realizes he’s running out of words)
In short, I have so many good qualities that I can’t even list them all!
What makes me less than Alvin?
Alright, if we’re talking looks, I…
(voice starts strong but weakens, feeling insecure)
Well, he is actually better looking than me...
(then gets fired up again)
But I win on being unique!
Damn it! Fine! I admit he’s better than me!
So what? Candy was mine first.
When Alvin was sick, I took care of him.
When he was heartbroken, I helped him dry his tears.
When he was pursuing girls, we helped him come up with ideas.
Nobody supported him except Tom and me.
No matter how busy we are, we’d still meet up whenever we’re back in Hong Kong.
We’ve been brothers for so long. How can Alvin choose a girl over his brother?
(After speaking, he falls silent)
Tom:
You’re talking like it’s not true.
Think back on what I just said. Has Alvin ever not helped you?
Nokia: I...
Tom: Plus, Alvin didn’t even pursue Candy.
Nokia: But Candy did kiss him!
Tom: Are you crazy? Just because she kissed him doesn’t mean Alvin is pursuing her! So does that mean I’m a food critic if I eat? Are you out of logic here?
Nokia: Um...
(pause)
Nokia: Wait! Where did you come from? Didn’t I just send you home?
Tom: I woke up! I was going to buy a pack of cigarettes and saw you here looking dumb.
Nokia: So you’ve been here the whole time?
Tom: Maybe.
(Suddenly, Nokia’s phone rings)
Nokia: (talking to himself) Who’s calling me out of the blue?
(picks up the call)
Nokia: Hello? (in a normal tone)
Nokia: Hello, Alvin? (background noise is too loud to hear what Alvin is saying)
Nokia: It’s too noisy on your end, I can’t hear you!
Nokia: Hello?
(hears a loud noise)
Nokia: Alvin, are you okay? (suddenly realizing something is wrong, struggles to stay composed)
Nokia: Alvin seems to be in trouble.
Tom: Let’s go look for him!
Nokia: Damn it, let’s hurry! I’ll call an Uber!

Scene 8: Brotherly Heart-to-Heart
Location: On the street, near a trash bin
(Alvin is sitting next to the trash bin, another guy, Eric, is watching over him)
Nokia: Hey Eric! What’s wrong with him? Is he okay?
Eric: He just saw his ex and, for some reason, he’s super emo. He’s been drinking all by himself! He threw up earlier, but he should be coming back to himself now! You guys are just in time to check on him. I have to go find my girl, see ya!
Nokia, Tom: Byeeee
Tom: You talk to him, I’ll go to the restroom first!
Nokia: Hmm! Okay!
(Tom goes backstage)
Nokia: Hey, wake up!
Nokia: (coldly) You shouldn’t have gone away first.
(tries to leave)
Alvin: Hey!
(Nokia sits back down)
(A moment of silence)
Nokia: Hey! I’m sorry!
Alvin: Sorry for what?
Nokia: I shouldn’t have said you were stealing girls.
Alvin: Forget it! But you shouldn’t waste your time on girls either! You’re just trying to get some action.
Nokia: Damn you, I’m all about pure love!
Alvin: Hey! But it’s a good thing you didn’t pursue her. Ugh, forget it.
Nokia: Why do you say that?
Alvin: She’s already been claimed by our group leader Easton.
Nokia: Oh, that’s why Easton reacted so strongly that day!
Alvin: Ugh, stop talking about that. Do you want a smoke?
Nokia: Double or nothing?
Alvin: (confidently) Double or nothing.
Nokia: Marlboro?
Alvin: Marlboro, but I—
Nokia: Don’t have a lighter. I don’t know what you’re doing, but you always need to borrow my lighter. Alright, let me find one for you. (searching his pants pocket) Oh shit!
Alvin: What’s wrong?
Nokia: Where’s my lighter?

Act 2: Fated But Not Destined
Scene 1
Male Host (Git Zai): When two people are together, it’s about fate. But can they go all the way to the end? That’s determined by destiny, and you can’t force it. This world doesn’t have anything that lasts forever; it’s the regrets that make things unforgettable. Hello everyone, welcome to the Late Night Love Mailbox. I’m your Jie Zai.
Female Host (Jia Ying): I’m Jia Ying.
Jie Zai: Jia Ying, what was the reason for your last breakup?
Jia Ying: It was the usual stuff, personality clashes and all that.
Jie Zai: Hey! Is that an excuse? Could it be that you both didn’t love each other enough?
Jia Ying: Looking back now, I think it was because we wanted different things. He wanted a very ordinary relationship, to live a stable life with someone for the rest of his days. But you know me, I’m not that kind of person.
Jie Zai: Do you regret it?
Jia Ying: Not really! I would say that without him, I wouldn’t be the version of myself I am now. We were happy once, and that’s enough for me!
Male Host: That’s right, but I know some people are only meant to meet, not to possess. Since both of you know you can’t be together forever, it’s actually quite nice to turn that memory into something eternal. Today, we have a female listener with a similar story. Let’s call her and listen in.
Calling someone soundtrack
Host: Hello, who am I speaking to?
Qing Qing: Hello, I’m Qing Qing.
Jie Zai: Hello Qing Qing, what would you like to talk to us about today?
Qing Qing: My ex is getting married next week, and I don’t know if I should go! I thought I had moved on...
Jie Zai: How about this? Before we discuss whether you should attend the wedding, can you share your story with us first?
[Slowly fades to black]
Qing Qing: We met in high school, let’s call him Mr. E. After I started working, we began living together. At first, it was very happy, but then...

Scene 2
Location: Dessert Shop
(Qing Qing and Eric are already seated, quietly chatting.)
(The waiter comes out from the back with two bowls of dessert.)
Waiter: (placing down the desserts) Here’s your "Heart Too Soft" and your mango sago. Enjoy!
(The waiter goes back to the kitchen, and Qing Qing and Eric start eating the desserts, continuing their conversation while eating.)
Qing Qing: Babe, I have one bad news and one good news. Which one do you want to hear first?
Eric: Babe, usually your bad news is good news for me, and your good news is bad news for me. So let’s go with the bad news first.
Qing Qing: The bad news... is that I’m pregnant.
Eric (who was eating dessert, suddenly leans in closer.)
Qing Qing: (wipes his mouth with a napkin) Look at you! I was just teasing you!
Eric: Babe, don’t joke about things like this! I almost started planning our wedding!
Qing Qing: Alright, stop being petty! Anyway, the bad news is that our landlord, that auntie, said she wants to increase our rent.
Eric: What about the good news?
Qing Qing: The good news is that the campfire newspaper I applied to has accepted me!
Eric: Really? Then I’ll have to call you Reporter Lin from now on! Let’s celebrate! (stands up, squints his eyes to prepare for a kiss)
Qing Qing: You want to kiss me! I couldn’t find you all morning, and I still haven’t talked to you about Dr. Zhou! (lightly pushes his face, making him sit back down)
Eric: (in a small voice) Chiu! You’re so petty!
Qing Qing: What did you say?
Eric: Nothing, nothing... You know I have to endure for another two years before I can become a doctor; it’s really hard on you. I’m sorry, babe!
Qing Qing: That’s a debt to repay! We agreed, you support me in being a reporter, and I’ll support you in being a doctor.
Eric: I promise you, after I graduate, I will take care of you!
Qing Qing: Just listen first!
Eric: But I’m worried that by the time I become a doctor, I’ll turn out like that Nokia guy.
Qing Qing: Which Nokia?
Eric: What? The one from high school who lost all his hair! If I end up looking like him, will you still love me?
Qing Qing: Oh~ then I’ll definitely not want you! After that, it’s clubbing and partying every day!
Eric: (pouts)
Qing Qing: Alright, alright, my love.
Eric: Fine, but why did the rent suddenly increase?
Qing Qing: Well, the auntie knew I just started working, and you’re still studying, so she gave us a lower rent. Now that I found a job, I suspect she found out somehow and increased our rent!
Eric: So before I started working, you had to endure all this, sugar mommy!
Qing Qing: (laughing) Who’s your sugar mommy?
(Voice gradually lowers)
Eric: Isn’t it you?
Eric: Hey, don’t pretend you didn’t hear me!
Qing Qing: Ah! Babe, it seems like a new Japanese place called “Sushi Host” opened nearby; let’s try it.
Eric: Don’t change the subject.

Scene 3
Location: Home
(Qing Qing is exercising while Eric is looking at his phone.)
Eric: Time to eat! Stop playing around!
Qing Qing: I’m telling you, I’m seriously trying to lose weight this time; don’t disrupt my rhythm!
Eric: Okay, does rhythm mean I can’t mess with it?
Wow! The beef today looks especially good! Let’s try it! The fat distribution is just right! If you don’t try it, you’ll be foolish! What are you looking at? Do your workout! One, two, one, two.
Qing Qing: Yes.
Eric: Put in some effort.
Qing Qing: Yes.
Eric: Be motivated! Struggle!
Qing Qing: Yes!!!
Eric: There you go!
Qing Qing: Why should I listen to you? (goes to the bean bag, grabs Eric’s meat.)
Eric: Hey! That beef is mine! Go back to struggling!
(They eat, about ten seconds pass)
Qing Qing: What are you looking at?
Eric: Nothing.
Qing Qing: Nothing? You look so happy.
Eric: I’m really not.
(Qing Qing snatches his phone.)
Qing Qing: (bombastic stare) Give it back!
Qing Qing: Wow, so many girls—
Eric: I told you I’m actually looking at what they’re wearing. Do you believe me?
Qing Qing: Do you think I believe you? Huh! Do you believe? (playfully hits Eric.)
Eric: Don’t be angry; it’s your birthday today, so don’t be mad!
Qing Qing: You even remember my birthday, but where’s my gift? Candy and Nokia! On my birthday, I had balloons and candles. We were having hot pot, and you were late to eat at the street stall!
(Qing Qing crosses her arms and sits.)
Eric: Ta-da! Let’s see what this is! (pulls something out from under the couch.)
(Qing Qing smiles.)
Qing Qing: You’re off the hook.
Eric: This necklace is impressive! It has my name on it, and when you wear it, it’s like that neighbor’s Tommy; those flies will know who the owner is.
Qing Qing: (can’t help but laugh, then immediately turns serious) Wait! Are you saying I’m a dog? Aren’t you?
Eric: No... But do you like it?
Qing Qing: Okay, la.
Eric: Okay. (gently pokes her cheek) So let’s smile a bit, shall we?
Qing Qing: Ugh! It’s always like this; you tease me and then tell me two lame jokes like nothing happened!
Eric: Then I won’t tell any lame jokes; I’ll just tease you.
Qing Qing: (mouthing) Screw you.
Eric: Is it true? Don’t lie to me; I’ve never had a woman before. Just thinking about it gets me excited.
Qing Qing: Wait a minute.
(Goes to the back.)
Qing Qing: Here!
Eric: What is it?
Qing Qing: A gift! Don’t want it? Then I won’t give it.
Eric: Of course I want it!
Qing Qing: Hope you become a doctor soon! Keep it up!
Eric: Thank you... (thinking of hugging Qing Qing.)
Qing Qing: Alright, alright! Let’s watch TV!
Eric: What are we watching? (picks up the remote.)
Qing Qing: How about we watch the Late Night Love Mailbox?
Eric: Huh, that sounds boring. Can we watch a drama instead?
Qing Qing: But listening to other people’s love troubles is quite interesting.
Eric: We don’t have love troubles, so why should we listen to others’ troubles? It’s not worth it to make ourselves unhappy. Maybe we should just rewatch that “Love Elevator” show from last time.
Qing Qing: Oh, that sounds good...
(Qing Qing cuddles her arm around Eric and leans her head on him.)
(TV soundtrack) (lighting blue and white)
Qing Qing: Ah! I wonder how I can be as feminine as Sun Li En—
Eric: Actually, there are ways—just depends on whether you want it fast or slow!
Qing Qing: Fast!
Eric: Reincarnate!
Qing Qing: Ugh! (pushes his head) But what if it’s slow?
Eric: Reincarnate twice. (runs to the back.)
Qing Qing: What did you say! (chases into the back.)
(They playfully fight.)

Scene 5
Qing Qing: I’m back.
Eric: SURPRISE!!! (sets off a confetti popper)
Qing Qing: What’s going on? (more shocked than excited.)
Eric: Today is our eighth anniversary!
Qing Qing: Oh, then I’ll just go change first.
Eric: Hey, come on! I’ve been preparing for so long!
Qing Qing: I’m so tired; can you let me rest a bit? I don’t even want this!
Eric: (looking wronged) But you said you wanted a sense of ceremony! Last time for your birthday, you said you wanted balloons and such! Now you don’t like it? What do you want me to do?
Qing Qing: I’m so tired! I just got off work, and I just want to rest!
Eric: Ugh! You come back tired every day; is there a day you’re not tired?
Qing Qing: Why can’t you think from my perspective? Every time I get scolded by my boss, finish overtime, and you still ask me to do what? I’m really struggling!
Eric: You don’t tell me anything; how am I supposed to know how to think from your perspective?
Qing Qing: What do you mean? You don’t even work; what can you help me with?
Eric: So is it my fault that I’m studying medicine? Yes, you’re the busiest one in the house; I cook dinner every night, and I always wait until the food gets cold before we can eat.
Qing Qing: What can I do? You said you’d support me in being a reporter, and I’d support you in being a doctor. What’s going on? You can’t even get through one year; why can’t you do it?
Eric: Yes, I did say that. You’re so busy; then we don’t have to be together. You said you lost the necklace I gave you. Maybe you left it at another guy’s place.
(Qing Qing slaps Eric.)
Qing Qing: (voice trembling) You really disappoint me. I’m so tired. I have to work tomorrow, and I can’t argue with you.
Eric: Work, work, work! Your whole mind is just work!
(Eric goes backstage.)
(Qing Qing pulls out the necklace from her pants pocket, sits down and cries.)

Scene 6
Left Stage: Eric and his sister, Tan Zai, are having a meal.
Right Stage: Qing Qing and her best friend are chatting at home.
Spotlight on Left Stage.
Eric’s sister, Cynthia, walks out from backstage and playfully shoves Eric's head from behind.
Eric: (unhappily) Who’s messing with me from behind?
Cynthia: You brat! If you hadn’t invited me out for a meal today, your parents wouldn’t even know you’re still alive!
(Cynthia sits down.)
Eric: I’m busy. (feeling exhausted.)
Cynthia: You cut your hair, huh?
Eric: Yeah. (feeling exhausted.)
Cynthia: What’s going on?
Eric: What do you mean?
Cynthia: Last time you were so down; we have to trace back to when you last broke up.
Eric: Ugh, I’m just tired...
Cynthia: (raises her hand to the back) Excuse me!!
(Tan Zai’s sister walks out from backstage, taking out a notebook to write.)
Tan Zai’s Sister: What would you like to eat, miss?
Cynthia: I’d like beef, beef balls, and fish tofu, no spice, please.
Tan Zai’s Sister: One order of beef and fish tofu, no spice, coming right up.
Eric: I’d like a spicy pork belly, ten spice.
Tan Zai’s Sister: One spicy pork belly, coming right up.
Eric: I’d like a cold lemon tea, less sweet.
Tan Zai’s Sister: One cold lemon tea, less sweet, coming right up.
(Tan Zai’s Sister goes back to the kitchen.)
Cynthia: You don’t look sick or in pain, yet you seem so down. You really have something on your mind.
Eric: ...
Cynthia: If you’re not speaking, I’ll leave. (stands up and pretends to walk away.)
Eric: Hey! (grabs her hand.)
Cynthia: (sits back down) What’s the matter? Last time you mentioned that your relationship with Qing Qing is having problems. Do you like someone else, or is Qing Qing cheating?
Eric: No, sis, can you not be so nosy?
Cynthia: What’s going on with you and Qing Qing then?
Eric: I really don’t understand why we used to be so sweet and had so much to talk about. But for some reason, after she started working, we fight every day. In the last four months, we haven’t even had a chance to talk.
Cynthia: Well, that’s actually normal! She’s working, and you’re still studying; you’re in two different worlds! Do you think it’s still like being kids in love?
Eric: I know, I get it! But I’m trying so hard to get back to how we were before. I even bought her balloons, the things she loves, to celebrate our eighth anniversary, hoping we could return to how we were! Why can’t we?
Cynthia: Little brother! You haven’t started working yet; you don’t get it. When she comes home from work, she’s exhausted; you have no idea what she’s been through. She might have been scolded by her boss, finished overtime, and you have no idea. How can she have the energy to deal with you? If she didn’t scold you, wouldn’t she just be grinning?
Eric: What can IEric: What can I do then?
Cynthia: Actually, I’ve wanted to tell you for a long time! Have you ever thought that maybe Qing Qing isn’t really the right person for you?
Eric: But I really love her!
Cynthia: Love and compatibility are two different things.
Eric: I don’t understand. (shakes his head)
Cynthia: It’s really like when you eat at that noodle shop. Right now, you’re having plain broth, but you used to enjoy the spicy broth. You remember how every time we went there, you’d want it spicy.
Eric: I remember! After eating, I’d always end up in the bathroom, and my parents would joke that they thought I went to North Korea because the bathroom looked like it had just experienced a nuclear explosion.
Cynthia: Spicy noodles are like the people I used to date. They are enjoyable, but they always leave me with a painful experience afterward. Back in the day, when I liked someone, I thought I could conquer the world just by liking them. You remember my ex, right? I loved him so much, and I knew he loved me too. We kept breaking up and getting back together, trying to change for each other, but can love alone really sustain a relationship?
Eric: So, can’t we just work things out slowly? Why can’t we sit down together and sort things out? Every time we argue and reach a critical point, she just storms out.
Cynthia: Young man, you’re too young for this. After one issue, two issues, three issues, you’ll start to see that reality is harsh. The more you love someone and try to change yourself to maintain the relationship, the more likely you’ll end up hurting yourself. Because you’re focusing solely on making the other person happy, without truly changing your own mindset.
Your mom always says, “Just find the right person and marry them.” But many “right” people are just as bland as plain broth—tasteless and unmemorable. If that’s the case, what’s the difference between that and eating a bowl of plain noodles? I’d rather not eat at all.
Eric: So, is your husband Jason the right person for you or someone you just like?
Cynthia: (smiling) Why not both?
Eric: Isn’t it easy to find?
Cynthia: Do you really think Jason is perfect for me? Of course not! It’s all about compromise. Even if he has many things I want him to change, he doesn’t pay attention to me.
Eric: Didn’t you just say that the wrong person can’t be compromised with?
Cynthia: Living unhappily is about differing lifestyles, so you have to adjust to each other. But when you and your partner want different things, it’s really hard to adjust. The safety and companionship I want, Jason can give me, and I can provide him what he wants. It works out. People grow up; when Qing Qing steps into the workforce, she’ll meet new people and see new things, and her values will change. If you both change at different rates, you won’t sync up. You’re not wrong; she’s not wrong either. But while Qing Qing is pedaling a bike, you’re still walking.
Eric lowers his head and stays silent. (maybe takes a deep breath)
Cynthia: Actually, if you and Qing Qing are really what you say you are, have you thought about letting go? The reason you both got together was that you enjoyed being happy with each other. But now, if you both have nothing to talk about, what’s the difference between being together and being alone? Before you completely ruin it, wouldn’t it be better to freeze your love at its best moment?
If you truly love her, you should learn to let go. Don’t waste each other's time. Think about it.
(There’s a pause for contemplation.)
Eric: By the way, sis...
Cynthia: Hmm? (thinking he has something serious to say.)
Eric: You actually look pretty good when you talk normally. Why do you always act so silly?
Eric immediately runs backstage.
Cynthia: (immediately changes her expression to angry and chases after him) You better not run! If I don’t beat you up today, I’m not a Zhou!
(Chases out, into backstage.)
Tan Zai’s Sister: (holding two bowls) Hey? Are you two fighting?
---
Scene 7
Candy: (excitedly) Wait! Are you really thinking about breaking up? You two are the longest couple I’ve seen. I always thought you would get married!
Qing Qing: I used to think so too!
Candy: What’s the reason?
Qing Qing: (calmly) We used to fight every week. I thought it was okay because at least we were still willing to argue. But when you’ve tried everything and don’t want to argue anymore, that’s when I knew our time was up!
Candy: Tell me how he makes you angry and what he did wrong. You know my guy, Nokia, right? He’s friends with Tom, Alvin, and Eric. I’ll call Nokia and have him and the guys deal with Eric. (takes out her phone.)
Qing Qing: No, it’s not his fault! It’s me! (takes the phone away and puts it down.)
Candy: So what does that mean?
Qing Qing: I’m just tired. I can’t balance love and work. I was wrong; dating in school is different from now! (the real reason for the breakup)
Candy: How can that be? Didn’t you say Eric supports you in being a reporter and gives you more space?
Qing Qing: No! I can’t be a competent girlfriend! Just last time, we celebrated our anniversary; he prepared a wonderful surprise for me. But I had just gotten off work, and I was so tired that I didn’t even think and snapped at him.
Candy: But you’ve been together for eight years; you love him, and he must love you too. It’s such a small thing; you don’t have to break up!
Qing Qing: It’s not just this time. You know, eight years! (starting to cry) So many memories! I don’t want it to end so badly! Because I love him, I want to let him go, because I truly think I’m not right for him. Do you understand?
Candy: But whether you’re right for him isn’t just your decision, right? Have you talked to Eric yet?
Qing Qing: Let’s put it this way, he’s not right for me. At least at this moment. (smiling to cover her sadness) (begins to sing) But I want to spend the last few days before we break up happily.
(Christy sings "Contradictions in a Lifetime.") (Cherrie goes back to backstage.)
[Blackout)
Scene 8
Location: Dessert Shop
Waiter: What would you like to eat? Oh! Long time no see you two!
Eric: (awkwardly) Yeah! Been busy!
Waiter: Oh! Is it the usual? You’ll have the “Soft Heart” dessert, and she’ll have the mango sago.
Eric: Yes!
Qingqing: No! I haven’t had mango sago in a long time; it’s too sweet. I’ll have a bowl of tofu pudding, please! (The change in taste symbolizes a change in feelings.)
Waiter: Got it, I’ll be right back.
(The waiter goes backstage)
Qingqing: Can we talk?
Eric: How about tomorrow instead? (Christy interrupts) I’m really tired today.
Qingqing: (interrupts) Let’s talk today.
(Silence)
Qingqing: Can we clarify things now?
Eric: (looking down, trying to avoid) Let’s talk next time...
Qingqing: (exploding) Our personalities are completely different! It’s just like how you only eat the “Soft Heart” dessert. Have you tried their taro balls? Their glutinous rice balls? Their tofu pudding is the signature dessert here. Have you thought about how, while everyone else moves forward, you’re just standing still? Eric, that’s not how life works.
Eric: So you like to try new things. I’ve known that since day one, so I’m just the person who supports you from behind, giving you suggestions.
Qingqing: (impatiently) Eric, some things are just wrong, and it’s just wrong! I... (excitedly speaking the truth) I don’t know how to keep going with you! You always just hesitate before acting. When I say I want to do A, you only then go to do A. Last time on my birthday, I wanted balloons to go to a fancy restaurant. I wanted you to do it on your own. For our 8th anniversary, I said I wanted to go camping, but you gave me something I wanted last year instead. You only gave it to me a year later. What’s the point? When you’re in a relationship, you have to invest your heart and effort. You don’t have the heart to move forward with me. I want you to understand me! (Crying)
Eric: (starting to cry)
Eric: (confused) It’s not that we don’t love each other; it’s just that we haven’t adjusted yet. I can give you emotional support. How about we get married two years after I graduate?
Qingqing: Marriage? (helplessly) Why do you think marriage will solve our problems?
Eric: We’ve been together for so long; it’s just like a married couple. Even though we’ve lost that initial romantic feeling, isn’t a simple, honest love the most sincere kind of love?
Qingqing: Do you feel that love for you is like a responsibility? You always take time to see me because you feel you have a responsibility in this relationship, not because you truly want to see me. You’re not willingly living life with me or thinking about the future. I’ve tried to follow your pace, but I want some reciprocation too. (Crying)
(Pause with sobbing sounds)
Qingqing: I hope you have a better future, even if it doesn’t include me.
(A couple enters and sits where they used to sit)
Boyfriend: Baby, what do you want to eat?
Girlfriend: Mmmmm, I want to have “Soft Heart” and also mango sago.
Boyfriend: Then let’s order both! Please!
(The waiter comes back)
Waiter: Yes! What would you like to eat?
Blackout
(Grayson sings "Giving You Happiness, So Happy")

Scene 9
Jiezi: (eating cup noodles) (sniffling)
Qingqing: What’s that sound?
Jiezi: Oh, nothing! After hearing your story, even I, who is single, can feel that heartache. It made me shed a few tears!
Qingqing: Oh... So do you think I should go to his wedding?
Jiaying: Qingqing, could it be that you’re not letting go of this person, but rather the version of yourself that gave everything back then?
Qingqing: ....I don’t know, maybe I still care...
Jiaying: I understand. Basically, you’ve invested 100% of your youth in this guy. As for whether to go to the wedding, can you really do it? To look at the person you once loved deeply stepping into another phase of life with someone else?
Jiezi: Since so much time has passed, if he sent you an invitation, he must have moved on. Isn’t it time for you to move on too? To go to the wedding and say goodbye to your past self?
Qingqing: ...sigh.
Jiezi: But I believe that after talking for so long, deep down you should have your own answer. Just follow your heart!
Qingqing: Understood.
Jiaying: Alright, thank you Qingqing for calling in to share your past love story. If any of the viewers want to hear more love stories, remember to tune in next week.
Jiaying, Jiezi: (together) Late Night Love Mailbox!
Jiezi: Bye Bye
(Cut off)
Jiezi: Woof, that’s a wrap.
(Gets up to pack things up)
Jiezi: Speaking of which, a few years ago—didn’t a medical student submit a story about wanting to get back with his girlfriend? But the producer thought his story wasn’t juicy enough and didn’t choose him to call in. The female lead sounded a lot like Qingqing!
Jiaying: Ah, I remember! Back then, I even said he was so pussy for not pursuing her

Act 3: Camera
Scene 1: Interview
Host: First of all, let’s congratulate our guest today. Recently, he won the Best New Director Award at the Asian Film Awards, Director Wong Ha-wai! Director Wong, did you ever think that your first film would have such a big impact?
Ha-wai: Actually, I never thought about it... because I was just happy to be able to complete the work to the best of my ability; I never thought about winning any awards. I didn’t have that big of an expectation—just finishing it was already great! (laughs)
Host: But it really has made quite a splash, and it’s the first time in film history that an entire movie was shot using a hand-held camera, very special!
Ha-wai: Mhm.
Host: There are also many nominations, including for screenwriting, directing, and best actor, among many others. I understand that as a director, at the beginning you wouldn’t think too much about achievements, but can you now sit back and enjoy this sense of accomplishment?
Ha-wai: I wouldn’t say I’m enjoying it! Right now, I actually feel a bit anxious and somewhat guilty, wondering if I can really accept this recognition. I look at my own work and think about how many areas I can still improve on... yes.
Host: I see that you have this camera! I know this was given to you by your worker sister when you were young, and it’s also the reason you decided to become a director. Can you tell us more about your childhood story?
(Pause)
(The yellow light begins to dim)
Ha-wai: (taking a deep breath to mention something sad) I would say it’s one of my biggest regrets in life and also the motivation for me to become a director...
(Sound fades out)
(More about tech)

Scene 2: Family
Location: Living Room
(Dad is reading the newspaper)
Maria: Sir, it’s time for dinner.
Dad: Hmm. Hey, you two, come eat! Don’t make me call you a second time.
Maria: Sir, should I go back to the kitchen to eat?
Dad: Hmm.
Sister: You can eat here! Why do you need to go to the kitchen?
Ha-wai: Exactly.
Maria: It’s fine, I’ll just eat in the kitchen!
Ha-wai: No, you can eat here!
Dad: Stop talking, the dishes are getting cold.
(Maria goes backstage)
Sister: Dad, dinner!
Ha-wai: Dad, dinner!
Dad: Hmm? What’s going on? Your younger brother and sister are on a trip this month; didn’t you hear me say to study hard, or are you doing something inappropriate again?
Ha-wai: Yes, yes, yes! Dad, recently there’s a TV program called "Everyone Can Be a Director."
Dad: What’s that?
Ha-wai: It’s similar to "Everyone Can Be a Star," but it’s not about selecting stars; it’s about selecting directors. If I say I want to participate...
Dad: Didn’t I say this a hundred times? Everything waits until you finish your studies and university!
Sister: I think he just wants to try more things outside of studying. As long as he can handle it, let him participate! Can he?
Ha-wai: Yes, yes! If I win the championship, there might be a chance to make a movie!
Dad: Try, try, try! Haven’t you tried enough already? (bangs chopsticks on the table)
(Maria walks out to see what’s going on)
I tell you nicely to focus on your studies, and you don’t listen, only knowing how to film these lousy movies! Your name is Wong Ha-wai; do you really think you’re Wong Kar-wai?
Ha-wai: (looking down while eating) Enough! Have you even watched any movies? (bangs on the table and stands up) Since childhood, have you ever supported what I wanted to do?
Dad: (stands up) What kind of attitude is this when you talk to me?
Sister: Little brother! (pulls his hand, sister twists her head to hint him to stop talking)
(Ha-wai shakes off his sister’s hand)
Maria: Wai-wai (starts coughing, takes a towel and covers her mouth)
Dad: Let him talk! He has so many grievances!
Ha-wai: Ever since Mom left, you’ve been out making money. Have you ever understood me? Do you know what I like to eat? Do you know what I want to do after school? Which restaurant I want to celebrate my birthday at? The one who knows me best is actually Maria! Why should I follow your path? You can’t even fulfill a small request for me to participate in a competition? How dare you tell me to do whatever you say!
Dad: Because I’m your father! Because I promised your mother to take good care of you!
Ha-wai: I just know that if Mom were still here, she would want to see me happy.
Dad: You dare to say that again?
Ha-wai: It’s a waste of breath talking to you. (walks to the right of the stage)
Sister: Dad, shouldn’t you listen to what little brother has to say...
Dad: (interrupts) Enough! I’m going out for a smoke first. (walks to the left of the stage)
...
(Maria finishes coughing and looks at the towel, immediately putting it away. The audience might think it looks like she coughed up blood.)
Maria: Sigh... (prepares to walk back to the right)
(Sister runs to the right and grabs Maria’s hand, interrupting her from going back inside)
Maria: Sister! Are you looking for me?
Sister: Don’t think I didn’t hear you! You were coughing so much just now; is it getting serious?
(holds Maria's arm)
Maria: I’m fine!
Sister: Why don’t you go back to the countryside to rest? It would be good to go back and check it out!
Maria: I’m really fine! This is my home! You and Wai-wai are the closest people to me; you know that!
Sister: But you don’t have much time left now. Don’t you have anything else you want to do?
Maria: No.
Sister: Really nothing?
Maria: No... If I have to say something, I just want to take good care of you two, and I want to see Ha-wai do what he wants to do. He has worked hard for so long.
Sister: Do you really believe he can do it?
Maria: I believe he can! You think I don’t know? Every time your little brother wants to participate in some competition, you always encourage Sir to let him join.
Sister: But he has to have the nature to do it! Only you spoil him like this!
Maria: (slaps her hand) You! Take some time to talk to little brother!
Blackout

Scene 3: Rekindling
Location: Living Room
(Clearing everything off the table and onto the floor)
Maria: Wai-wai! Have you taken a shower yet? (coughs)
Ha-wai: Wait a minute!
Maria: Wai-wai, you’ve been sitting there for hours. You really need to take a shower; you smell bad. Go on, come out and eat!
Ha-wai: Wait a minute!
Maria: NO! Hurry up and go!
Ha-wai: I said wait a minute before coming down! You don’t have to worry about me!
(Ha-wai looks at Maria)
(Ha-wai picks up the camera; Maria sees his action and understands what’s going on)
(Maria knows he needs some comfort, coughs, and sits down on a chair)
Maria: Wai-wai—don’t be mad at Sir; he can’t see your efforts. He’ll understand later!
Ha-wai: (looks down, lost in thought for a moment) Maria, some things can’t be done just because you want to. You can see that my dad only wants me to study hard, find a job, and go to the office. Plus, I’m not even good at filming.
Maria: No! Your last script was great, very interesting!
Ha-wai: What do you know? What have you watched?
Maria: (coughs) Don’t underestimate yourself; it’s really good!
Ha-wai: Even if you think it’s good! Over 200 comments are just criticizing my work for being terrible! They don’t know anything and just say it’s good!
Forget it! Maybe my dad is right; I can’t even manage to study, just wasting my time every day. Why participate in competitions at all!
Maria: Noooo, I think you should participate; that is your dream, right?
Ha-wai: Dream, dream, dream. Do you even know what a dream is?
(Pause)
Maria: I don’t know what a dream is. I’ve already come to Hong Kong to work in my twenties. I really don’t know what a dream is. I’ve taken care of you for ten years, and I’ve long considered you half my son. Every day, being at home with you, each time you talk excitedly about movies, I don’t know how many times I’ve seen that face!
(PLSSSSS MAYBE SOME MUSIC HERE SO IT'S AWKWARD)
Ha-wai: (his attitude begins to change) But my dad...
Maria: Think about it! Have there been any times when you entered a competition, and your dad said no, that you really listened to him?
Ha-wai: ...
Maria: I don’t have a dream, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have one. Film, I’m very clear—that’s your dream.
Blackout

Scene 4: Outburst
Location: Living Room
(Ha-wai is pacing back and forth)
Ha-wai: How should I write this?
(Ha-wai sits back down, writing on a pile of paper)
(Ha-wai grabs his hair with both hands)
Maria: If you can’t think of anything, just eat first, okay? (pulls Ha-wai’s hand)
Ha-wai: I’m not eating!
Maria: If you’re not eating, what do you want?
Ha-wai: Just give me a glass of water!
(Maria goes backstage to get a cup of water)
(Maria’s hand shakes and spills it on the pile of paper)
Ha-wai: Shit, shit, shit, shit! (immediately uses a tissue to wipe it up)
(Maria tries to help)
Ha-wai: I’m working, don’t bother me! (waves his hand away)
Maria: (still shaking her hand, scared) Sorry... sorry...
Ha-wai: I told you not to bother me!
Ha-wai: Just get out of here, okay?
Maria: Sorry, I was dizzy and accidentally spilled the water.
Ha-wai: Dizzy? You can’t be careful when dizzy? If you’re sick, don’t do anything! I really don’t understand you! If you’re sick, don’t do anything, don’t come back! Go back to the countryside!
Maria: (hurt, can refer to "The Fallen" scene 31:47) I just wanted to help! (almost crying) You didn’t have to say that!
Ha-wai: (interrupts) I’m already 17! Why do you care so much? You’re not my mother! Do you think I’m really your son?
Ha-wai: You said you’d support me in pursuing my dreams! Now I don’t even have a script! What else can you support me with? The deadline is next week; do you know that?
(Soundtrack: Door opening sound)
(Sister just comes home, enters from stage left, rushes forward)
Sister: Hey! I heard everything outside! Why are you being so mean? Are you out of your mind? Why are you talking to Maria like that?
Sister: Wong Ha-wai! Do you know how much Maria cares for you? Don’t you know? You know that every time there’s a competition, Dad doesn’t approve, it’s Maria who tells me to persuade Dad! And you treat her like this! I warn you, you better apologize tomorrow!
Ha-wai: ...
(Sister angrily grabs Maria and takes her back into the room, leaving Ha-wai alone, confused and chaotic)

Scene 5: Loss
(Ha-wai knocks on Maria’s door)
(Soundtrack: knock, knock, knock)
(Ha-wai speaks at the door)
Ha-wai: Maria?
(Ha-wai knocks on Maria’s door again)
(Soundtrack: knock, knock, knock)
Ha-wai: I know you might not want to answer me right now. I’m sorry for talking to you like that yesterday.
Ha-wai: .......... My mom left when I was very young, and my dad often ignores me. It’s always been you who has been with me. When I was little, I always wondered why I didn’t have a mom, if it meant I wasn’t worthy of love. You said before that you took care of me for ten years and considered me your son... actually, I feel the same. You’ve always been the one to pick me up from school, help me with my homework, and play with me. You’ve always been there supporting me, and to me, you are my mom... Without you, maybe I wouldn’t be who I am today. I wouldn’t be so confident, and I definitely wouldn’t think about pursuing my dreams... I’m sorry; I shouldn’t have talked to you like that yesterday...
(Ha-wai knocks on Maria’s door again)
(Soundtrack: knock, knock, knock)
Ha-wai: Maria? Maria?
(Ha-wai opens the door and enters, unsure if Maria is still lying there)
Ha-wai: Maria? Don’t scare me!
Ha-wai: Maria!
Ha-wai: Maria!

Scene 6: Regret
(Lights back on—SUPER BRIGHT WHITE LIGHT)
Location: Hospital Corridor
(A doctor walks out)
(Sister and Ha-wai walk towards the doctor)
Ha-wai: What’s going on? Doctor?
(Doctor turns his head)
Eric: We’ve done our best!
(Upon hearing this, Ha-wai immediately squats down, staring blankly at the ceiling with a look of despair)
(Eric speaks to the sister)
Eric: Miss Wong, you’ve been accompanying the patient in and out of the hospital for so long; you’ve worked hard!
Sister: Thank you.
Eric: Before the patient lost consciousness, they were holding this camera. I think giving it to you is the best choice. There’s nothing else; I’ll go back to work now. A nurse should come by to inform you about the procedures shortly.
(Hands the camera to the sister)
(Sister places it in her bag)
Sister: Okay, thank you.
(Eric exits stage right)
Ha-wai: In and out so many times? That means you knew all along! Why didn’t you tell us?
Sister: Maria told me not to say anything. How could I tell you? Dad doesn’t care, and you’re busy chasing your dreams. Who has time to care about Maria?
Ha-wai: If you don’t say anything, how do you know I wouldn’t let go of what I’m doing?
Sister: You’re quite shameless, you know! You told Maria that she’s blocking your dream!
Ha-wai: ... We’re family! We need to communicate. I treat her like my mom!
(Sister grabs Ha-wai by the collar)
Sister: You treat her like your mom? You talk to her like that? You disdain her? Now it’s only you treating her like your mom? You only know how to chase dreams and dreams; have you thought about the people around you? Wong Ha-wai, have you ever considered how selfish you really are?
(Pause)
Ha-wai: ...
Sister: Why aren’t you saying anything? Regretful? Don’t you usually have so much to say?
(Ha-wai bends down)
Ha-wai: I don’t know; I don’t know. (starts crying)

Scene 7: Tears of Regret
(Her passing was not a storm, but a lifetime of dampness)
Location: Home Living Room
(There’s a dining table on stage with three chairs around it)
(Yellow lights on, sad music fades in)
(Just returned home from the hospital)
(Sister and Ha-wai step in)
(Drops things, sits down, places the camera on the table)
Ha-wai: Where's Dad?
Sister: He’s working and won’t be home for dinner tonight. What do you want to eat?
Ha-wai: Just a cup of noodles will do! I’ll go get it.
Sister: I’ll eat in my room first.
(Enters the kitchen: stage right)
(Takes out a cup of noodles and sits down again)
(Starts eating, looking at the empty chair)
(As he eats)
(Ha-wai picks up Maria’s belongings - the hand-held camera)
(Ha-wai opens it)
Lights off
(Video plays)
Ha-wai, if you hear this video, I guess I might not be around anymore! (coughs) Don’t blame your sister; I told her not to tell you about my illness! (coughs)
You used to always ask me what a dream is, and I said I didn’t know— I guess it’s me sitting in the audience watching every one of your future films. But I think I might not be able to do that! So I changed my dream; my current dream is to see you shine and become the director you’ve always wanted to be.
Do you remember when I didn’t know how to use those mobile things? You helped me! You even laughed at me for being like an old person.
When I first saw you, you were so little; time really flies, and now you and your sister have grown so tall.
(laughing and crying) Aww, I was clearly talking about something happy, and suddenly I’m crying!
You always say I took care of you for ten years, but haven’t you and your sister also been with me for ten years?Sure! Here’s the continuation of the translated text:
---
You don’t have to worry about me! I will always be watching over you! I almost forgot—the camera! I saved up for a long time to buy this, so consider it your birthday gift for this year!
(Ha-wai breaks down in tears: free expression)
